Both rely on microorganisms to break down pollutants, but they work in different ways.
So, what makes MBBR different?
🔹 1. Different Biological Growth Forms
Activated sludge mainly relies on suspended microorganisms (flocs) in the wastewater.
MBBR uses specially designed plastic carriers to provide surfaces for microorganisms to attach and form biofilm, combining attached-growth and suspended-growth biological treatment.
🔹 2. Use of Reactor Space
MBBR carriers provide additional protected surface area for biofilm development within the reactor. This can help increase biological treatment capacity without necessarily expanding the tank.
🔹 3. Operational Flexibility
MBBR can be applied in new treatment plants or used to upgrade certain existing biological treatment systems, depending on process compatibility and engineering design.
🔹 4. Different Process Requirements
MBBR still requires proper aeration, mixing, and media retention. Activated sludge requires effective sludge separation and return. Each process has its own operational considerations.
There is no universal answer.
The right choice depends on wastewater characteristics, treatment targets, available space, investment budget, and operating requirements.
Good wastewater treatment starts with choosing the right process—not simply following the latest technology trend.
At Small Boss, we manufacture MBBR media for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment applications worldwide.
